Awards That Will Transform Your Quiz Program9/11/2018 3 Comments In my business, I’ve observed that a solid strategy to recognize outstanding achievements results in stronger engagement, increased employee morale, and lower turnover. In quizzing terms, think of those as stronger relationships, increased enthusiasm, and fewer dropouts. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Well, it’s not as easy as it seems. You need to find the right recognition program that fits the values and culture for your church or District quiz program - and it can change each season. Given that more than half of my District is brand new to quizzing this year, I decided to focus less exclusively on rewarding performance and to start celebrating accomplishments. We aren’t quite large enough to have separate Novice and Experienced divisions, so finding a way to encourage the new quizzers while the Experienced quizzers likely dominate the standard awards was imperative. Celebrate quizzers in a way that aligns with your valuesThe aim of Bible Quizzing is to become an avenue of meaningful Bible study, fellowship, discipleship, mentoring, mission, and exciting Christian competition. So this year we are celebrating quizzers and teams for their spectacular effort, great results, and inspirational support in ways that align with these values. Types of Awards and Where to Get ThemFor any type of award, you can spend as little or as much as you want. Here are some ideas, in order of ascending cost:

Award CategoriesChoose awards that align with your values and fill a perceived gap in the quiz program. When you show your students that you see and appreciate their efforts — and take the time to reinforce how much of a measurable impact they’re having on the team — those teens feel good about what they do and they take those feelings home with them. Here are some awards listed by category. Again, these are listed to inspire you - do not attempt to do all of these at the same time! Having too many awards could unintentionally lessen the value of all awards. As Syndrome says in The Incredibles, "When everyone is super, no one will be." SPECTACULAR EFFORT: Give awards that celebrate a focused effort or specialization.

GREAT RESULTS: Recognize outstanding individual and team achievements.
INSPIRATIONAL SUPPORT: Recognize those who provide a significant contribution in other ways. Of the seven stated goals of the Bible Quizzing mission statement, "exciting Christian competition" is listed last - and I believe that is intentional. Even if a quizzer doesn't answer a single question in competition all season, they still get the benefit of spiritual and relational growth that results from active participation in the ministry. They also make team practices more effective and provide encouragement for their teammates. SC Youth Bible Quiz motto
3 Comments Karl Tabor 9/27/2018 07:59:27 pm I'm pretty old-school with awards. My finances have always been tight too - so I give out ribbons at all the District Invitationals. Then get generous with trophies, plaques, medals, etc - at our District Finals. Years ago I did a WAY COOL Traveling Trophy... maybe I'll have to try one on my new district. :) I've always tried to pair recognition with the award itself - and recognize those who don't quite get awarded too. I like the creativity of these award ideas and will have to consider. I've always hesitated about the "Inspirational" type awards. Yes - these attempt to recognize the most important aspects of what we do. But is it right to give an award for it? And in this case especially - what are we saying to all the quizzers who DON'T win the award for "Most Spiritual Quizzer"? It's also possible to give those out to someone that the other quizzers might suspect doesn't really have it all together so well (and they could be right). That's why I'm not fond of awards which are subjective-based - especially the first reason, where we have to set ourselves up as judges on the character of the quizzers. We get good hard numbers for the objective awards. I would rather award on that basis - and let virtue be its own reward. :) Reply Lancelet Stanly 8/24/2019 12:41:18 am Quiz Reply William Rayppen Joseph 3/27/2024 06:07:31 pm Blessings Reply | The TBQ PodcastCheck out the Podcast tab to listen to the archived episodes!
