  InfoSec is one of the rare professions that lends itself to immediate and relevant crossovers into not just other functional areas of an organization, but even an org’s ERGs and community activities. When a mission statement of service and larger community protection drives your InfoSec program objectives (read: style your program as a PSA!) you can find all sorts of opportunities to collaborate with any other group. I think a very real KPI for leadership is the number of win-win collaborations you manage to execute each year (or even each quarter).

It goes beyond just defending against attacks; it’s about developing a robust, high-flex mindset and infrastructure that can learn from the cyberthreats that are being combatted. This means incorporating continuous learning, agile methodologies, and a culture of proactive risk management into cybersecurity practices. It’s not just about having the right tools and protocols, but also about nurturing a mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. By fostering resilience, individuals and organizations can turn cyber threats into catalysts for innovation, staying ahead in the ever-evolving landscape.

• How can you maintain credibility when delivering messages?

  Some core aspects of earning and maintaining credibility-perception:Honesty. Stick to the facts and never exaggerate.Consistency. Flip-flopping is for pancakes, not for message delivery.Knowledge. Be the expert, or at least sound like one. Google is your friend.Confidence. Project conviction and assertiveness, but don’t overdo it. No one likes a know-it-all.Listening. Sometimes, your ears can win more credibility than your mouth.Humility. You’re not the Oracle of Delphi. It’s okay not to know everything.

• What are effective ways to encourage team members to actively listen during a Culture Change meeting?

  Here are my top three tips that may differ from more common recommendations:1. Explicitly asking for active listening can set the stage for success. A "closed laptops" rule can help. Minimize distractions!2. Create a safe space for open communication - lead by example, by offering up an embarrassing story or something. This will immediately diffuse tension, lighten up moods, and help people feel like they can be engaged without judgement. 3. Ditch the death by PowerPoint - or make your slides largely graphical and action/movement-oriented; VERY quick to flip through (this is its own skillset, so you'll generally just want to nix the deck unless you really know what you're doing). ...In general, keep things light and interactive!
