music saved my life pt 1 (2024)

Music saves my life daily. It can improve my mood, help me contemplate life more deeply, move me to tears, or even give me a laugh.

I love the transformative nature of music. I enjoy artists that bear their souls:

I’m linking my current playlist with a few songs that I have in my rotation and why I love them

Good Old Days (feat Kesha) by Macklemore

I wish somebody would have told me that these were the good ole days.”

So many days I spend mindlessly going through life, its not until I pause and look back at my trail of photo evidence, that I realize I was having fun. So much fun with loved ones. So many deep connections. My advice to my younger self in school – enjoy all of those moments. Breathe deeply. Look around you. Build connections. Have fun and take lots of pictures/videos. Life is changing constantly and without warning. People aren’t guaranteed in your life. Even if they’re still alive, they might not be in your life forever. Cherish the now.

Nobody Hozier

Hozier always gives autumn vibes. My favorite line is “I wouldn’t fall for someone I thought couldn’t misbehave”

As someone who admittedly likes a dash of chaos, this line speaks to my natural inclination to go outside the lines that society so harshly dictates. Furthermore, I love a man that can unabashedly share how much he loves being around his woman.

Calm & Patient Jhene Aiko

This song is incredibly grounding. I love being able to sing the lyrics of a song with my full chest. I try to be conscious with what I let come out of my mouth. I believe our words have power. The song talks about being able to face anything and singing through the pain, dancing through the rain, etc. It acknowledges the painful feelings of life, with a positive perspective. Jhene’s voice is angelic as always.

Girls Like You Ralph Sings

I love the intro to this song. The sample. The voicemail. The message of the song is basically what every woman wants to hear (I think). I’ll speak for myself. Again, a man earnestly singing about wanting to be near a woman GETS ME. The artist is the most amazing gentleman. I met him while he was working at a Kroger that I would frequent when I lived in the city last year. He always had the best attitude and the best customer services. He remembered people- not just me. He made connections and imparted joy into people’s days. Knowing he created this song makes it that much better.

All I Ask Adele

My older sister gifted me 25 adele’s album and I remember giving a fake, trying to be genuine “Thank you!” I wouldn’t have considered myself an Adele fan before then. When you listen to her albums, she brings you through a journey of transformation, pain, growth, and release. All I ask tackles the conversation that I’m sure several of us have had with soon to be former lovers. “Will I find a connection this strong out in the world?” Even when you know a relationship has run its course…you still have a moment of fear. She details that “it matters how this ends.” which to me speaks to wanting to honor the relationship you had by having one final, beautiful departure. Can we pretend, just for a brief moment that everything is okay, even though I know this will be the last time you hold me?

Loveeeeee Song Rihanna, Future

This song is a spiritual experience for me. Future’s dichotomy of bad boy meets earnest lover, is always hilarious to me. Then Rihanna comes in with the most sensual verse. She is an in control type of lady and we are here for it.

Can’t Take My Eyes off You Frankie Valli

This song makes me think of a lovely old couple dancing in the kitchen, looking into each other’s eyes – being in love. I don’t know if that exists – but I want it. When the song can articulate what is happening in my mind/heart, that eye contact hits different. Also a great song to sing into your hairbrush.

Wait Billy Lemos, Still Woozy, Blake Saint David

The beat starts out sounding like lo-fi, very smooth, very boppy, but still cool. Then in comes this almost wind chime sound – ethereal af. Half way through, the song switches into almost a spoken word type rap. I’m a huge fan of songs that change up in the middle. Love a lover boy. He’s a little awkward but it works so well with the inherent weirdness of the song.
