Richt running the ball from the 2 yd line against AU in 2001 w/16 seconds (time expired)

Kirby running IMac on 4th and 1 against Vanderbilt?

Both shrugged off their rookie calls and was very successful.

Kirby. If I recall correctly, we showed the look/motion and a timeout was called. Then we proceeded to run the play anyway.

Richt running the ball against Auburn still lives rent free in my head. I still can't believe he did that.

From the highlight I remember, he didn't even start panicking it seemed until about the six second mark.

    Funny thing about that play...

I believe Michael "stonehands" Chibgu had a five yard out route that hit him directly in the chest and he dropped it. Never should have even got to that point. I just know our field goal kicking that year was an absolute carnival.

Might I add the Gurley never touching the ball on 1st and goal in Columbia? Missed the damn field goal too. That’s when I was done with CMR.

lol what are you doing? That’s giving @DocSkraynj the bat signal on Bobo. LOL

But yes sir, I agree. Still recall a dropped pass at home vs SC as well that might have kept us out of the Nc game.

I just went back and watched it and the throw was a little behind Chigbu but was absolutely catchable.

The IMac play was actually well blocked but a 150 lb slot couldn’t break a 1 on 1 tackle. You have Chubb and Sony…either of them gets the first and some.

Just boggles me that we show the look and motion and double down even after they call the TO

The I-Mac vs Vandy play should’ve worked. We faked a dive and they sold out to stop the inside run. Only issue was Zach Cunningham having the game of his life and somehow picking up his 19th tackle of the game.

Not spiking the ball at the end of the SEC championship was a bad call as well.

Kirby, but we can blame that on Chaney. You give the ball to Chubb or Michel and we get that 1 yard. Don't hand it off to the smallest player on offense.

this is a sensible take. a lot of these criticisms are just classic "hindsight is 20/20" stuff. including not spiking the ball in '12 IMO.

imo, the not giving the ball to gurley at SCjr with 1st and goal... that's the one mentioned i would have the hardest time defending.

Yep, most on here don’t care for context, just if it worked or not.

I agree that the 2014 SCjr call was a bad draw up and should’ve gone to the best player in the country, but I also think Hutson Mason deserves some flack for that one.

The squib kick against Tech and the sky kick against Tennessee. Absolutely atrocious calls.

The squib kick against Tech giving Butker a chance at a 53 yarder or whatever it was gives me an aneurysm.

Richt was one of the worst coaches I’ve ever seen at clock management sadly..

A lot of coaches don't spike it there. A spike takes a second or two off the clock. A quick incompletion takes two to three seconds off the clock. The defense doesn't have the chance to reset itself after a long gain, and you are essentially trying to get an extra play. What you don't count on is your star running back being lazy in pass pro and allowing a linebacker to penetrate deep enough to tip the pass that freakishly winds up in the hands of a receiver who can't score or get out of bounds.

I still would have spiked it...2-3 plays from the 5, with a fairly mobile and efficient QB....hindsight is 20/20, and if it had worked, there'd only be praise for the confident call...but I can't get the vision of AM running down the field looking to the sideline making the spike motion out of my head

I completely understand. There was a play clock management guru in the 90s who wrote a really good book (and I'm too lazy to google it though I read it 30 years ago) and he was convinced that spiking the ball in any scenario other than getting your field goal unit on the field was a waste. I can see the argument that you don't want to give Saban and Kirby time to set their defense, but I think Gurley would have made the block on the linebacker cleanly had he not just sprinted down the field to get set. So I wish we would have spiked it, but it was far from Richt's worst moment when he chose to keep going.

I will never forget leaving the Clemson and NC State game in 2016 after Vanderbilt had just beaten us. A friend of mine invited me up and I was like, it is the Vanderbilt game. If we lose, I don't want to be there.

Kirby running IMac against Vandy. It’s not shameful to lose to Auburn in an 8-3 rookie season. Auburn was actually good back then. It is shameful to run IMac on 4th and one and lose to Vandy on homecoming when you had both Chubb and Michel in your backfield. I was in favor of firing Kirby and Chaney right then.
