I’m on my way to 3rd kid.
My 1st is 3yrs old. So I do have 2-3 years to send him to school.
I wanted to know y’all’s opinion on private schooling vs public?

I can’t speak for private school. But one of my best friends is a teacher and she told me to keep my kids out of public school if I can. Very little expectations of work being completed, zero consequences for not doing work, zero consequences for bad behavior which disrupts the other students, kids not being able to fail even if they do nothing so the schools can get funding, students being pass out from grade to grade while not knowing the content from the previous grade. I went to public school (I’m 30 now) and it seems to be getting worse and worse as the years go on. Thankfully, I live in Florida and we have school choice now.

@EmmyD5,
before we had school choice, kids had to go to school based on their address and zip code, even if parents didn’t want their kids attending the school in their zone. Now you can choose what public school you want your kids to attend. In addition, if you want to put your kids in private school, there is a scholarship that is about $7500 a year for tuition.

I think it really depends on where you live. Some areas have excellent public schools, others do not.
We'll be sending ours to public school because we're by the top elementary school in the city. The middle and high school aren't that great, but we plan to move before then to a different district.
I'd do some research in your area, talk to parents and tour the schools!

@cm0000,
I second this. I live in a bad area, schools here are HORRIBLE. I got a geographic exception and drive about 25min out to a different district for a better school. We unfortunately cannot afford private school here in Hawaii because price of living alone is outrageous.

@cm0000,
This! My husband and I are both public school teachers. We've both taught in schools we'd be happy to send our kids to and schools that we would absolutely not send them to. Private schools are similarly inconsistent. Some are great, but the worst teacher I know got fired from a public school and has been teaching private for several years now. I wouldn't want to pay to put my kid in her class. We're looking to move about 20 minutes away in a few years because our zoned elementary school is great, but we don't want our kids at the middle/high schools here.
You can't really generalize "public school" or "private school" the quality totally depends on the individual schools.

@Rmgonzalez11,
I have to agree with this 100%. I’m in special Ed in a public school and we constantly get students from the adjacent private school which has a very poorly run Special Ed dept and very few services -OT ,Speech, DAPE you name it. It really depends on the individual schools .

This HIGHLY depends on where you live and what's available to you.
Where I live, if you go to public school you go based on where you live. So you can only go to a zoned school. If you live in a decent area then chances are that you have decent schools. However, class sizes tend to be much larger in public schools.
Private school tends to have smaller classes, and you can go to whichever school regardless of where you live. The main issue is price. Private pre-k can be about $20K and up. I went to public school for half my life and then to Private school. Private school tuition here is INSANE. When I started (over 15 years ago) it was $25K for K through 12. By the time I got to high school it was supposed to be $30K. By the time I graduated (just over 10 years ago) it was $33K. Now it's almost $60K. And most comparable private schools here are in that range ($50K to $65K). Catholic schools are significantly cheaper, but many of them are basically public schools you pay for.
I personally would never send my kid to private school for their entire academic career because, at least here, private school kids are a lot more sheltered and just not aware of their privilege and how the real world works. Private schools here tend to breed entitled kids who know that they're guaranteed to graduate and go to a decent college because of the school they go to. They don't necessarily have to work hard. I had MANY lazy students in my class. If I did private school then it would be similar to how I did it (for middle and high school) because that's when it matters more and when it will have a bigger impact on things like college.
Like I said, this highly depends on where you live and what's available. If you have good public schools near you then I would stick with those. If you don't have good public schools then look into private ones.

I agree with what everyone else has said. it highly depends on the area you live in. I live in a more rural part of CO. Both my MIL and sister are teachers in different grades and they both would not put their kids in our public school system at the moment. So we chose to try homeschooling first and then we might try online private schooling but that's down the road so we haven't fully decided yet.

@Philothea279,
We started a bit last fall and all our older littles want to join in. Our oldest was 5 in January. We will register here as we can get provincial funding for supplies. We’ll see how it goes…this is baby #5.

I went to private school and ended up transferring to public in 8th grade. There were more academic and extracurricular opportunities in the public system for me and I found that the other kids were less cliquey and snobby. That said, we have excellent public schools in our area. It really does depend on where you are. Personally we are going to try public and, if that doesn’t work, homeschool. I don’t really see the value in private. Research has shown that, barring extreme circ*mstances, academic outcomes have way more to do with the quality of life at home anyway.

It definitely depends on the schools in your area. Ask moms who have elementary aged kids what they think of the schools!
I totally understand the reasoning behind private school, but if your child is neurodivergent or has any type of special learning need you should definitely consider public school. Private schools do not have the resources or knowledge to handle these issues unless they are a specialized private school.

Public school teacher here - as a lot of people have said it really depends on your area. I’m really lucky and live in an area with great public schools. Also keep in mind that private schools don’t necessarily require teachers to have teaching credentials so they’re generally “less qualified”. However, that’s absolutely not always the case. There are obviously really great private school teachers.
Education in general is going through it right now. A lot of cultural, and political *** has happened with schools since Covid. If it were me, I’d ignore what the hype says in the media and go visit the schools you’re considering. Talk to the parents and teachers. Find out if it’s a good fit for your kid. No school is perfect, but in my experience 99% of the people who work at them are there to help kids succeed. Good luck!

where we used to live we were considering private over public if finances worked out. since moving we had heard fro. various parents that the schools here aren't great but 1 elementary school is OK. we don't want to settle on ok. so we may go a completely different route and homeschool. we will see what we do we have plenty of time yet.
